James Merritt - “The primary purpose of reading the Bible is not to know the Bible, but to know God.”
D.L. Moody - “The Bible was not given for our information but for our transformation.”
As I look ahead to the new year, I began to think about what my hopes and desires are for our church family in 2016. One theme that kept repeating itself over and over again in my mind was commitment to God’s Word & sound doctrine.
Paul wrote to Timothy in 2 Timothy 3:14-17, “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
As we saturate our hearts and minds with the truth, exposing ourselves daily to the Bible’s content, we will be transformed by the “renewing of our minds” (Rom. 12:2). The Bible will instruct us, convict us, correct us and condition us. The Word makes us useful for God’s purposes. As we enter into a new year, will you covenant with me to be people of the Word? Will you commit to reading it daily, and to spend time in prayer for our church and ministry?
My prayer is that we will be transformed in 2016 by the power of the Word of God!
